"One of the main tasks of art is to report on its own era – beyond general and eternal human, artistic, and genre truths," said Gabriella Hajnal. Her art is indeed not only an imprint of these timeless truths, but also a manifestation of her unique vision and her search for the fullness of reality. Her works uniformly reflect all the realities she has experienced and which have touched her: beauty and human frailty, the richness of nature, the delicate systems of organic relationships – in short, the wonder that springs from life.
As she herself writes: “Art cannot exist without wonder.” For her, noticing miracles was natural: she walked through the world with her eyes open, experiencing the everyday life burdened by 20th-century history, while at the same time marveling at the pulsating streets of Tokyo or the sprawling grandeur of the Australian landscape.
The works presented at the exhibition offer insight into Gabriella Hajnal's artistic and personal realities. Visitors can see a slice of the rich intellectual and creative world through which the artist conveys her experiences of the world. This is a condensed imprint of a life's work that has been shaped over decades: a glimpse into how she saw and expressed the whole of existence. The works simultaneously convey the rawness of everyday life, the bitterness of social injustices, and the subtle irony of humor and the fleeting, fragile wonder of beauty.
In Gabriella's hands, textile art is a particularly sensitive and multifaceted medium. By pushing technical boundaries, she conveys her everyday impressions and thoughts, while the flowing forms and layered compositions suggest that reality is never static. It is constantly evolving, changing, distorting, yet forming a unity. In tapestries from different eras, the darker tones of pain are often mixed with sharper details of humor: grotesque figures appear that simultaneously make us laugh and think about human stupidity, or the wonders of nature, such as the path carved out by the river's own power. The masterfully crafted technique comes to life, a system built within a strict framework, yet flowing and organic, like the structure of language, the forms of letters and the meaning and beauty they create.
Moments of wonder flash through the works—blooming landscapes, mythical motifs, the sign system of language—while signs of injustice, oppressed figures, broken forms, and the multifaceted messages composed of letters reveal deeper layers. This is what makes Gabriella Hajnal's art universal: she has seen everything, experienced everything, and incorporated it all into her works. The exhibition is not a chronological overview of her oeuvre, but a thematic journey through this rich universe, where each piece of fabric tells its own story.
