Márta Kiss's exhibition In My Dreams I Saw depicts the stages of an inner journey. The images reflect her work with personality parts, encounters with archetypes, and messages of the unconscious condensed into symbolic images. Márta's art also bears the imprint of an interesting period of rethinking in painting.
Those who saw Márta Kiss's January 2023 exhibition (I'm finally embroidering something abstract), where she discovered the potential of working with very simple, reduced forms and motifs, may have witnessed a revelation after the disintegration of a well-constructed world. She was still interested in figurative representation, but she had to find a new set of tools and materials for the simple reason that she had become allergic to oil paint, the material that had been her medium of expression until then. It was a great pleasure for him to simplify and find essences in his paintings.
The paintings in the exhibition I saw it in my dreams are born out of a desire to meet the self, where Márta tries to translate a piece of her personality, her emotions or her experiences into paintings. In these often archetypal images, we can discover ourselves, we can connect with parts of ourselves, whether we are aware of them or not.
The closure, which started in 2020 and lasted for almost two years, the lack of ongoing programmes and events has left room for many people to be introspective. This was the case for Martha, too; immersion in analogical thinking and self-awareness therapies inevitably brought her many encounters with inner images. The newly discovered, more reductive style of performance was useful for depicting these. Thus, figural representation returned, but the figures were placed in abstracted, imaginative symbolic spaces. Then, over time, he began to think again in terms of larger scale, multi-figure compositions, these paintings characterised by a more restrained colour scheme than before.
