Márta Kiss

1974, Budapest

"My path started as a restorer but after I started to paint my own paintings, I chose to be a painter. For nearly two decades my art was defined by a traditional oil technique and a view based sight with the addition of magical and symbolic elements. A few years ago my experimental mood led me to a technical innovation: I started to be interested in doing embroidery on paintings. It was exciting not because of the decorative function but an opportunity for a new opening space. This emergency (allergic reaction of chemicals and paints) made me choose a different direction in my techniques and my visual thinking. In the past in addition to the figural elements and the dramatic spectacle, the story was also important: myths, fairy tales, Biblical stories or even invisible regions had been intertwined with people's everyday life. I was always interested in how you can express in pictures the everyday’s consciousness and the invisible things. Lately I’ve been thinking how to create with a simple toolbox and symbolized motives, either from the collective or from my own inner world."
